Community service as part of the school program
Giving service to the community is an important value in our society. It is a value that we all would like to foster in our young people.

From 2007, all students in Year 10 will be able to give service to the community as part of their school program. This will happen when the Community Service Program is introduced. The program will be extended to Year 11 in 2008.

As part of this program students will be expected to complete a minimum of 20 hours community service. This means that they will participate in voluntary activities that help or benefit individuals, groups or the community as a whole.

Schools will provide service opportunities for their students by linking with organisations and groups in their community. Students will also be able to receive recognition for service activities they already do in their own time.

Students will be able take all of Year 10 and Year 11 to do their 20 hours of community service.

From 2009 students will have to complete their 20 hours of community service to receive a Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) at the end of Year 12. Their community service will also be acknowledged on their Statement of Results.

What's happening in 2006?

Students from pilot schools who participate in the Community Service Program in 2006 will receive acknowledgement of their service on their Statement of Results Statement of Results when they finish Year 12.
