Getting volunteers involved at your agency

Follow these simple steps:
1. Register   2. Plan   3. YVolunteer

Register

If your agency is interested in having young people as volunteers at your agency, you should become a member of Volunteering WA. Click here to visit the VWA web site and download the membership application form.

If you are a member agency, get in touch with the Youth Services Manager, by phone (08) 9420 7288 or e-mail.
You can also register YVolunteer positions by filling out the YVolunteer Position Form.

Plan

When you are considering having young volunteers at your agency, you must consider the following:
1. What tasks are young people able to undertake at your agency?
2. What requirements are there for the position?
3. Is there someone at the agency who will be available to supervise?
4. Is there an age minimum for the position?*
5. Is there an orientation session students should attend prior to volunteering?
6. How many young people would be appropriate per volunteer session?

*Most schools have personal accident cover for students when they volunteer, so an age restriction should not be necessary unless a certain level of maturity is required for a particular position. If you are accepting young volunteers outside a school-approved activity, make sure you know the minimum age requirement of your voluntary personal accident cover. If the age minimum is too high eg. 18 years of age, you may want to consider having it changed to accommodate more young volunteers.

YVolunteer

Once the Youth Services Manager at Volunteering WA is aware of your agency’s requirements (by speaking to you and receiving your YVolunteer position details), you will be contacted with the details of the students who will be volunteering with you. You will be informed of their start date, teacher contact and any other relevant information.
If you have not already done so, we recommend that you have a look at the "Guide for Coordinators of Young Volunteers", now available online as separate A4 information sheets, which includes a Checklist for involving young people as volunteers to assist you with your participation in YVolunteer.
During and after the YVolunteer placement, please stay in touch with the Youth Services Manager to ensure a successful program. Also, feel free to get in touch with a student’s teacher if there are any issues you would like to raise. An evaluation form is available so that you may provide us with valuable feedback on the program.
